Cole Palmer’s heroics could not save Chelsea from an embarrassing slip against 10-man Burnley as the Blues were held to a 2-2 draw. The attacking midfielder was dangerous throughout the game and took his goal tally to 13 in the league, chipping in a penalty before firing home the winner in the second half. However, his team-mates refused to give up on the down-threatened Clarets and held on to secure a vital point on two occasions.

After a slow start, Chelsea were eventually able to take control of the game and thought they had taken the lead after 20 minutes when Axel Disasi headed in a Mikailo Mutrik cross. A lengthy VAR check ruled it out, however, as the ball struck his hand before going in.

Chelsea kept up the pressure and had several attempts, but Burnley came up against a strong Argentinian goal. The breakthrough came five minutes before half-time when Lorenz Assinone was sent off for his second booking in two minutes when Mudric went down in the box, while manager Vincent Kompany also saw red before Cole Palmer chipped a spot kick past Muric.

Despite the upset just before the break, Burnley came out on a half-time run and found themselves level with a wonderful Josh Cullen strike from the edge of the box. Mauricio Pochettino’s side had most of the possession but struggled to create good chances as Burnley held tight and Muric pulled off some excellent saves. The visitors enjoyed a better chance when Lyle Foster got a good header past Benoit Badiashil but was denied by Djordje Petrovic.

The home team finally put an end to their frustration though, surprise, surprise, it was Palmer who kept a cool head when he pounced on a flick from Raheem Sterling and slotted it into the net. Amazingly, Dara O’Shea brought another equalizer through the hands of Petrovic. The visitors found the winner after hitting the crossbar before sending the follow-up wide.

Pulled off some good saves to deny Burnley and could do nothing about the first equaliser, but should have stopped the second.

Malo Gusto (7/10):

There were some weak defensive moments early on, but the game developed with strong tackling and good movement down the left.

Axel Disasi (6/10):

Sounded in the air and on the ball. I saw his celebrations for the goal cut short by VAR.

By Benoit Badia (5/10):

Let Foster slip away for a better chance to put Burnley ahead.

Mark Gugurella (5/10):

The left didn’t look good as he failed to connect with Mudryk and offered nothing.

Sound on the ball but not providing enough protection for the back row.

Excellent passes to bring Chelsea’s attacks forward.

His passes were good and created a good chance for Mudric in the second half.

Good crosses, shots and some dangerous moments that connected well with others.
